Women In India

As more women in a district take jobs, their husbands feel less shame about their wives’ departures from home and hearth. During the pandemic, women have typically been the first in India to lose their jobs and the last to regain them. School shutdowns have forced some to drop out of the labour force to look after children who would normally be in class. Young women who have been unable to study, train or work during the pandemic are being married off instead.

In turn, this offsets reproduction and does not allow for a controlled reproductive trend. While the excess mortality of women is relatively high, it cannot be blamed completely for the unequal sex ratio in India. However, it is a large contributor considering the precedence that Indian men have over women. In contrast, honor killings are rare to non-existent in South India and the western Indian states of Maharashtra and Gujarat. In 1994 the Indian government passed a law forbidding women or their families from asking about the sex of the baby after an ultrasound scan and also expressly forbade doctors or any other persons from providing that information. In practice this law is widely ignored, and levels of abortion on female foetuses remain high and the sex ratio at birth keeps getting more skewed.

In embroidering on skin, a very sharp bone awl is used to make the holes. The point of the awl is pushed through from the back and the quill pulled tight, leaving a bit of the end to be bent and pressed into the skin. The design is made of lines composed of a series of upright stitches lying tight together. The width of the lines forming the designs determines the length of the stitch and these vary in width from one sixteenth to one quarter of an inch. For sewing, the women of the Plains used sinew instead of fiber thread.

There are obvious obstacles when it comes to Deaf women reporting in the first place, such as lack of interpreters, fear of stigma, and more. However, on top of that, the justice system does not respond well when a report actually does come in. Human Rights Watch even found that sometimes women and girls are denied access to accommodations if they cannot prove that they are disabled. Many cases are just swept under the rug, despite legislation in place.
